Oral Health Care for People with Disabilities

A brief reflective conversation about the status of access to oral health care in Canada for people with disabilities.

 

Objectives:

  • See people with disabilities through a new lens.

  • Become aware of the scope and incidence of people with disabilities/special needs in Ontario/Canada.

  • Become aware of the barriers to access to care they face.

  • Become familiar with techniques to allow you to see and treat people with disabilities with confidence and competence and discover the joy you feel at the end of the day for having positively affected another person’s life.

Olaf Plotzke

B.Sc., DDS., D.Ped., FPFA, FICD, FACD

Olaf graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry at UWO in 1977 and received his Diploma in Paediatric Dentistry in 1984 from Indiana University. He retired from practice in 2014.

He taught at the Schulich School of Dentistry for 41 years.

Since 1992, he has been the Dental Director of the Cleft Lip and Palate Team at TVCC in London, Ontario.

He has received awards from the LDDS and ODA along with the 2018 Alumni of Distinction Award from Western’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.

Olaf is passionate about paediatric dentistry and was chosen as the first president of The Canadian Society for Disability and Oral Health in 2020.
